A small hummingbird
feasts on one of the
succulent plants at
the Santa Barbara Zoo
in California.
While the caged animals
get the most attention, I can
easily spend hours with my
camera pointing into the zoo's
pretty flowerbeds, watching
the fast play and feeding frenzies
of the little hummingbirds, who live
inside the zoo's perimeter.
There were many
little hummingbirds
in this section of the
zoo that were vying
for the nectar in the
flowers of the succulent
desert plants. This
little guy had a few seconds
to himself to drink deeply
from one of the prized flowers,
but I chose to upload an image
where he was out and away from
the flowers in order to be able
to see his brilliant colors! In many
of the other images his beak was
well up inside the flower, and his
body was covered in shadow.

I have spent most of my life living in Southern California where I have developed an appreciation for all the beauty provided by nature. I've been blessed to be able to visit gorgeous mountains, like the High Sierra, which is home to some of the most majestic sights on earth, such as Yosemite National Park, as well as making quick trips to the beaches of the Pacific Coast, if I want to spend an evening shooting a sunset. One of my favorite past times has been to spend the spring season hunting down amazing wildflower blooms...including two years of "Superbloom" seasons in 2017 and 2019.
