There might be many profound meanings and interpretations in an artwork, including metaphors, idiomatic expressions, and symbolism.

Traditionally, in the history of art three major types have been recognized: representational, abstract, and non-representational. Representational Art depicts realistic objects in their true-to-life appearance. Abstract art connects real objects and their images, making them recognizable, but not reflecting their exact physical appearance. Non-representational Art does not show the physical appearance of people or objects and does not link its subject to any recognizable image of the real world. The language of non-representational art consists of lines, shapes, colors, and textures.
